Sciatica Treatment
Sciatica Treatment is aimed at achieving your goals. We want to get you moving, manage your pain and promote independence.
We’re very glad you asked. Pain doesn’t really care how old you are, nor your gender or your size, so neither do osteopaths. Osteopathy is appropriate for people of all ages, from babies all the way through life to the elderly, including pregnant women if they are suffering from one of the issues listed above in the What we Treat section.
We believe in total transparency and will be completely honest with you. In the unlikely event that you are suffering from something that cannot be helped by osteopathy, that needs urgent medical attention, or can be better helped elsewhere, then we’ll send you in the right direction with a referral letter explaining exactly why. We can also refer you for further investigation via your GP or elsewhere, whether it be an x-ray, an MRI scan or some blood tests.
The main aim of your consultation is to get a diagnosis and a treatment plan. At Move Easy this in a 4-stage process:
This is arguable the most important part of your consultation, where we try to get to the root cause of your pain just by talking with you. It involves you telling us as much as you can about why you’ve come to see us and your osteopath asking you lots of questions about the pain you’re in. We’ll also ask you about your family history and medical history to get a well-rounded picture of your overall health.
Once we have an idea of what’s going on from our conversation, we’ll need to have a look at your problem area(s) to get a diagnosis. This may involve having a look at how you sit and stand, as well as watching you easy you move, and comparing that to how easy you move when we move you. We may need to perform some special ‘orthopaedic’ tests, when appropriate, to rule some causes in and out. Oh, we’ll also check your blood pressure, just to make sure everything’s OK.
It’s important you understand that your osteopath will NOT treat you if you are not safe to treat. Sometimes, we may need to check a few things before we get started. As we said before, we’ll refer you if osteopathy isn’t right for you, if we need a second opinion, if you need urgent medical attention or if you could get better help elsewhere. To ascertain this, we are trained in how to perform medical examinations of the following:
-Musculoskeletal system (muscles, tendons, ligaments etc)
-Neurological system (nerves)
-Cranial nerves (nerves in your head and face)
-Respiratory system (breathing system)
-Cardiovascular (heart and vessel system)
-Abdomen/viscera (organs)
-Lymphatic system (lymph nodes)
-Other special tests
Once we’ve ascertained you’re safe to treat and we have got a diagnosis and a treatment plan, we’ll spend the time to talk you through what we think is going on. This will include why you’re in the pain you’re in, what we can do to help you and what you can do to help yourself. This is where we’ll tell you our tailor-made treatment plan for you, complete with how we’ll treat you hands-on, your homework and your prognosis (how long it will take to recover, other steps we’ll need to take etc.). This is when you will BOMBARD us with questions and we’ll be happy to answer them to the best of our ability.
The fun bit and, really, the main reason why you came. We’ll tell you exactly what we’re going to do before we do it, will repeatedly ask how our techniques feel, and will do our best to help you relax and enjoy the treatment. You’ll have the option to record the exercises we ask you to do on your phone to make sure you don’t forget them!
If you’ve been to us before but are coming for help with a different issue to before, we may need to go through another case history and examination. If you’re coming back as part of your treatment plan, we’ll just as you a few questions about how you’ve been and how easy you’re moving, retest your problem areas (neither stage will take as long as it did in the first appointment as we know what’s going on, we’ll just be monitoring progress) then waste no time getting on to your bespoke treatment.
We are never going to make you uncomfortable. It is entirely up to you whether you wish to undress to your underwear or not. We recommend that we are able to examine the problem area(s) that you have come to see us for, and sometimes some other areas too, but if you aren’t comfortable getting undressed to your underwear then we can roll clothes up or down or do our best with what we can. For males we recommend bringing some sports shorts to change into, and for females we recommend either sports shorts and/or leggings with a vest top and/or sports bra.
