Foot Pain Treatment in Bristol | Osteopath for Foot Pain
Foot pain is something many people simply put up with, assuming there is little that can be done beyond rest, new shoes, or painkillers. In our experience at Move Easy Osteopathy in Bristol, that is rarely true. The vast majority of foot pain has identifiable mechanical causes that respond well to osteopathic treatment and the right rehabilitation approach.
The foot is an extraordinarily complex structure containing 26 bones, 33 joints, and over 100 muscles, tendons, and ligaments. It is the foundation of the entire body. Problems here affect how the ankle, knee, hip, and lower back load and move, which is why foot pain that is left untreated often leads to problems higher up the chain over time.

EXCELLENT Based on 112 reviews Posted on Google Hemma PatelTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Dom has been great at helping to relieve my neck pain and headaches. After only a few sessions, my headaches have stopped. He listened to what I wanted or didn't want as part of my treatment and made me feel comfortable.Posted on Google Max SimpsonTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Had recurrent hamstring and lower muscle injuries for years as a rugby player working a desk job. Dom pointed out several factors that were causing the injuries I wasn’t aware of and his treatment has loosened up my entire posterior chain. Have been able to play with much lower rate of reoccurrence and at a higher level when I thought I was needing to retire at 27. Just finished an entire season injury free at 30.Posted on Google Demitri EliadesTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Great professional service, very knowledgeable. I have had many physical issues throughout my life whether it be a knee a hip, a neck or an ankle Dom is the guy. If you have any pain or alignment issues, then I would highly recommend this incredibly skilled man. I trust him 100% with all problems. Please note that he is also an incredible massage therapist and probably one of if not the most intuitive therapists I have ever had the pleasure of seeing, which in my case is literally hundreds. You don’t even have to tell him where that point is that you want him to massage or touch he will find it instantly. He’s incredibly geeky and 100% nerd worthy. He knows his stuff and is clearly an expert. Full of beans and positive energy. Plus, he’s built like a rugby player so no matter what your size he can do the job. You literally won’t get any better service from anyone else. Genuinely how I feel. Thanks Dom.Posted on Google David ThomasTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Dom has a brilliant demeanour; approachable, super knowledgeable and calming - this helped so much with understanding of my injury and return timelines. Having injured my shoulder playing rugby, I was struggling to exercise in any capacity, particularly playing rugby. Dom quickly diagnosed the injury and set out a plan for return to exercise. With Dom I was able to return to exercise with confidence and have had no problems since. Being an osteopath, Dom was able to perform manual therapy through dry needling and soft tissue manipulation in each session, which I am sure made a difference.Posted on Google Isobel Astley-CooperTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. What Causes Foot Pain?
At Move Easy Osteopathy in Bristol, we commonly treat the following causes of foot pain:
Plantar fasciitis
The most common cause of heel and foot pain we see. Plantar fasciitis is an irritation of the plantar fascia, the thick band of connective tissue that runs along the underside of the foot from the heel to the toes. It causes a sharp, stabbing pain on the underside of the heel, typically worst with the first steps in the morning or after periods of sitting. It is very common in runners, people who stand for long periods, and those who have recently increased their activity levels. It is very treatable with the right approach.
Metatarsalgia
Pain in the ball of the foot, typically worsening with standing, walking, and activity. Metatarsalgia is not a diagnosis in itself but a description of symptoms that can have several causes, including altered foot mechanics, tight calf muscles, Morton’s neuroma, and metatarsal stress fractures. Accurate assessment is essential to identify the specific cause.
Morton’s neuroma
A thickening of the tissue around one of the nerves supplying the toes, causing pain, burning, and tingling in the ball of the foot and toes. Typically felt between the third and fourth toes. Often worsens with tight footwear and improves when shoes are removed. Responds well to a combination of osteopathic treatment, footwear advice, and load management.
Hallux valgus (bunion)
A bony deformity at the base of the big toe that causes pain, redness, and swelling at the joint. Bunions develop gradually and are influenced by foot mechanics and footwear. While osteopathy cannot correct the structural deformity, treatment can significantly reduce pain, improve foot mechanics, and slow progression.
Hallux rigidus
Stiffness and pain in the big toe joint, caused by degenerative changes. The big toe is essential for normal walking and running, and restriction here significantly alters how the foot and the whole lower limb function. Osteopathic treatment to restore as much movement as possible in the big toe joint can make a significant difference to pain and function.
Tibialis posterior tendinopathy
Pain and swelling on the inner side of the ankle and foot, caused by degeneration of the tibialis posterior tendon, which plays a key role in supporting the arch of the foot. Often associated with flat feet and progressive arch collapse. Early treatment is important as this condition can worsen significantly if left untreated.
Stress fractures of the foot
Stress fractures most commonly affect the metatarsals and the navicular bone in the foot, typically in runners and those who have increased their activity levels too quickly. They cause localised pain that worsens with activity and eases with rest. If we suspect a stress fracture, we will refer you promptly for imaging.
Flat feet and high arches
Significant deviation from normal foot arch height, in either direction, alters how forces are distributed through the foot and the entire lower limb. Both flat feet and high arches can contribute to foot pain and to problems in the ankle, knee, hip, and lower back. We assess foot posture as part of every lower limb assessment and address it where it is contributing to symptoms.
Gout
Gout causes sudden, severe pain, redness, and swelling in the joints of the foot, most commonly the big toe. It is caused by a buildup of uric acid crystals in the joint. Acute gout requires medical management rather than osteopathic treatment, but we can help with the musculoskeletal consequences of recurrent gout and the movement restrictions it leaves behind.
Accurate Diagnosis
Through a detailed case history and accurate examination, we establish you a thorough diagnosis.
Expert Treatment
Tailored hands-on treatment helps the root cause of your issue, providing pain relief and improved function.

Foot Pain in Bristol Treatment
How Osteopathy Treats Foot Pain
At Move Easy Osteopathy in Bristol, we assess the foot in the context of the whole lower limb and lower back. Treatment is tailored to the specific diagnosis and your individual goals:
Joint mobilisation
Specific techniques to restore normal movement in the joints of the foot and ankle. The foot contains a large number of small joints that frequently become restricted following injury, overuse, or periods of inactivity. Restoring normal joint mobility is an essential foundation for recovery and for normal foot function.
Soft tissue treatment
Targeted massage and myofascial release to reduce tension in the plantar fascia, intrinsic foot muscles, calf, and surrounding structures. Particularly effective for plantar fasciitis, metatarsalgia, and Morton’s neuroma.
Medical Acupuncture
Effective for foot conditions involving trigger points in the calf, tibialis posterior, and intrinsic foot muscles. Dry needling of the calf and plantar fascia can produce significant and rapid reductions in heel and foot pain.
Footwear and orthotic advice
Footwear plays a significant role in many foot conditions. We provide practical, evidence-based advice on footwear choices and where appropriate advise on the use of orthotics or insoles to support recovery.
Rehabilitation and strength work
Using our gym space, we design a progressive rehabilitation programme targeting foot and ankle strength, intrinsic muscle control, and lower limb mechanics. Strengthening the foot and improving movement quality throughout the lower limb is what prevents foot problems from recurring.
Taping and support advice
Where appropriate, we use sports taping to support the foot and ankle during the early stages of rehabilitation or return to sport. We also advise on footwear and orthotic use where relevant and can refer to a podiatrist when necessary.
Who We See for Foot Pain in Bristol
We treat foot pain in patients of all ages and activity levels at our Bristol clinic. Runners from Clifton, Redland, and Eastville dealing with plantar fasciitis or metatarsal stress fractures. Office workers from Cotham and Whiteladies Road who spend long hours on their feet. Older patients from Gloucester Road and Westbury Park managing bunions, hallux rigidus, and degenerative foot pain. Dancers and gymnasts dealing with overuse injuries. People from across Bristol city centre who have put up with foot pain for years and assumed nothing could be done.
If your feet are painful, stiff, or simply not functioning as they should, it is worth getting a proper assessment. Foot problems have a way of contributing to pain and dysfunction throughout the lower limb and lower back if they are not addressed.

Frequently Asked Questions About Foot Pain
Can an osteopath help with foot pain?
Yes. Osteopathy is effective for a wide range of foot conditions, from plantar fasciitis and metatarsalgia to tendinopathy and osteoarthritis. We take a whole-body approach that addresses not just the foot but the factors throughout the lower limb that contribute to foot loading and injury.
Can osteopathy help with plantar fasciitis?
Yes. Plantar fasciitis is one of the most common conditions we treat and one that responds very well to osteopathic treatment combined with a structured rehabilitation approach. Most patients with plantar fasciitis experience significant improvement with the right treatment. Rest alone is rarely the answer.
I have had foot pain for years. Is it too late to get help?
No. Chronic foot pain does respond to treatment, though it may take longer than more recent presentations. Identifying and addressing the underlying cause rather than just managing symptoms is what makes the difference in longstanding cases.
Can osteopathy help with bunions?
Osteopathic treatment cannot correct a bunion deformity but it can significantly reduce pain, improve foot mechanics, and slow the progression of the condition. Many patients with bunions find that regular treatment allows them to remain active and comfortable without surgery.
Do I need a scan before seeing an osteopath?
No. In most cases we can assess and begin treating foot pain without imaging. If we feel a scan would help confirm the diagnosis or guide treatment, we will advise you accordingly.
Do I need a GP referral?
No. You can book directly with us. If we identify anything that requires further investigation or onward referral, we will advise you at your appointment.
How quickly can I get an appointment in Bristol?
We aim to offer appointments within a few days. Book online or call us and we will get you in as soon as possible.
Red Flags and When to Seek Urgent Help
Most foot pain is appropriate for osteopathic assessment and treatment. However, please seek urgent medical attention if your foot:
– Was injured with significant force and you are unable to bear weight
– Is hot, red, and severely swollen in a joint without a clear injury
– Has developed sudden severe pain, pallor, or coldness without injury
– Is accompanied by unexplained weight loss, fever, or night pain that disturbs your sleep
If in doubt, always seek urgent medical advice before booking an osteopathic appointment.
