Shoulder Pain Treatment in Bristol | Osteopath for Shoulder Pain

Shoulder pain is one of the most complex and frustrating conditions we treat at Move Easy Osteopathy in Bristol. The shoulder is the most mobile joint in the body and that mobility comes at the cost of stability, making it vulnerable to injury, overuse, and dysfunction.

Whether your shoulder pain came on suddenly from a specific incident, or has developed gradually over weeks and months, getting an accurate diagnosis early makes a significant difference to how quickly and completely you recover.

What Causes Shoulder Pain?

The shoulder is not a single joint — it’s a complex of four joints working together, supported by muscles, tendons, ligaments, and bursae. Problems in any of these structures can cause pain, and identifying exactly what’s going on is essential before treatment begins. At Move Easy Osteopathy in Bristol, we commonly treat:

Rotator cuff injuries the rotator cuff is a group of four muscles and their tendons that stabilise the shoulder and control its movement. Tears, strains, and tendinopathy of the rotator cuff are among the most common causes of shoulder pain we see — particularly in active patients and those who do repetitive overhead work. Symptoms typically include pain at the front or side of the shoulder, weakness when lifting, and pain that wakes you at night.

Shoulder impingement syndrome also known as subacromial impingement, this occurs when the tendons of the rotator cuff become pinched between the bones of the shoulder during movement. It causes a characteristic painful arc — pain when lifting the arm between roughly 60 and 120 degrees. Impingement is very common and responds well to osteopathic treatment and rehabilitation.

Frozen shoulder (adhesive capsulitis) a condition in which the shoulder joint capsule becomes inflamed and progressively stiffens, severely restricting movement in all directions. Frozen shoulder typically progresses through three phases — freezing, frozen, and thawing — and can last 18 months to three years without treatment. Osteopathic treatment and guided rehabilitation can significantly reduce the duration and severity of each phase.

Acromioclavicular (AC) joint problems the AC joint, at the top of the shoulder, is commonly injured in falls and contact sports, and can also develop degenerative changes over time. AC joint pain is typically felt at the very top of the shoulder and worsens with cross-body movements.

Bicep tendinopathy inflammation or degeneration of the bicep tendon causes pain at the front of the shoulder, often worsening with lifting and overhead activity. Commonly mistaken for rotator cuff problems, accurate diagnosis is key.

Referred pain from the neck and upper back not all shoulder pain originates in the shoulder. The joints and muscles of the cervical spine and thoracic spine frequently refer pain into the shoulder and upper arm. Treating the neck and upper back is often a key part of resolving shoulder pain — which is why a whole-body assessment is essential.

Osteoarthritis degenerative changes in the shoulder joint are common in older patients and in those with a history of injury or heavy manual work. Osteopathic treatment cannot reverse degenerative changes but can significantly reduce pain, improve movement, and slow progression.

Post-surgical shoulder we regularly see patients following shoulder surgery — rotator cuff repair, labral repair, AC joint reconstruction — who need structured rehabilitation to regain strength, mobility, and confidence. We work alongside surgical teams where appropriate.

Joint mobilisation

gentle, targeted techniques to restore normal movement in the shoulder, AC joint, sternoclavicular joint, and thoracic spine. Restoring movement throughout the whole shoulder complex, not just the glenohumeral joint, is essential for lasting recovery.

where neck and thoracic dysfunction is contributing to shoulder pain, we treat the whole chain. Ignoring the neck when treating the shoulder is one of the most common reasons shoulder pain doesn’t fully resolve.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can an osteopath help with shoulder pain?
Yes. Osteopathy is an effective treatment for a wide range of shoulder conditions, including rotator cuff problems, impingement, frozen shoulder, AC joint injuries, and referred pain from the neck. Accurate diagnosis is the starting point, and treatment is tailored to the specific cause of your pain.

How many sessions will I need?
It depends on the diagnosis. Acute shoulder strains and impingement often respond well within 4-6 sessions. Frozen shoulder and rotator cuff tendinopathy typically require a longer course of treatment and a structured rehabilitation programme. We’ll give you a realistic indication at your first appointment.

Can osteopathy help with a frozen shoulder?
Yes. Osteopathic treatment can help reduce pain, maintain and improve movement, and shorten the duration of each phase of frozen shoulder. It works best when started early, ideally in the freezing phase before significant stiffness has set in.

Do I need a scan before seeing an osteopath?
No. In most cases we can assess and begin treating shoulder pain without imaging. If we feel a scan would help confirm the diagnosis or guide treatment, we’ll advise you. You don’t need to wait for an MRI before booking.

My shoulder pain is worse at night, is that normal?
Night pain is common with several shoulder conditions, particularly rotator cuff problems and frozen shoulder. It’s a useful diagnostic indicator and something we’ll specifically ask about at your first appointment.

Can osteopathy help after shoulder surgery?
Yes. Post-surgical rehabilitation is an important part of what we do. We work with patients following rotator cuff repair, labral surgery, and AC joint reconstruction to restore strength, movement, and function.

Do I need a GP referral?
No. You can book directly with us. If we identify anything that requires further investigation or onward referral, we’ll advise you at your appointment.

How quickly can I get an appointment in Bristol?
We aim to offer appointments within a few days. Book online or call us and we’ll get you in as soon as possible.

We see people from Cotham, Redland, Clifton, Stokes Croft, Bedminster, Totterdown and around the City Centre.

Red Flags and When to Seek Urgent Help

Most shoulder pain is musculoskeletal and appropriate for osteopathic treatment. However, please seek urgent medical attention if your shoulder pain:

– Came on following significant trauma and is accompanied by obvious deformity
– Is accompanied by chest pain, shortness of breath, or pain radiating down the left arm as these can indicate a cardiac emergency
– Is accompanied by unexplained weight loss, fever, or night sweats
– Is rapidly worsening without a clear mechanical cause

If in doubt, always seek urgent medical advice first.
Please call us if you’re unsure who to see first and we can advise you on the best course of action.
