Arthritis Treatment in Bristol | Osteopath for Arthritis

Arthritis is one of the most common conditions we see at Move Easy Osteopathy in Bristol, and one of the most undertreated. Many people with arthritis are told that nothing can be done beyond pain medication and waiting for a joint replacement. In our experience, that is rarely the full picture. There is a great deal that osteopathic treatment and the right rehabilitation approach can do to reduce pain, improve movement, and help you stay active for longer.

Arthritis simply means inflammation of a joint. There are many different types, and understanding which type you have is the starting point for effective treatment.

Types of Arthritis We Treat

At Move Easy Osteopathy in Bristol, we commonly treat symptoms associated with the following types of arthritis:

Osteoarthritis

Osteoarthritis is the most common form of arthritis and the one we treat most frequently at our Bristol clinic. It involves the gradual breakdown of cartilage in one or more joints, leading to pain, stiffness, swelling, and reduced movement. It most commonly affects the knees, hips, lower back, neck, and hands, though it can affect any joint in the body.

Osteoarthritis is strongly associated with age, previous joint injury, and prolonged mechanical loading of a joint. It is not, however, simply an inevitable consequence of ageing that cannot be influenced. Research consistently shows that exercise and manual therapy significantly reduce pain and improve function in osteoarthritis, often more effectively than pain medication alone.

Osteopathic treatment cannot reverse cartilage degeneration, but it can reduce pain, restore as much movement as possible, slow progression, and significantly improve quality of life. Many of our patients with osteoarthritis avoid or delay surgery for years through a combination of manual treatment and exercise rehabilitation.

Inflammatory arthritis

Inflammatory arthritis includes conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, and ankylosing spondylitis. These are autoimmune conditions in which the immune system attacks the joints, causing inflammation, pain, swelling, and progressive joint damage. They require medical management with disease-modifying drugs, but osteopathic treatment plays an important supportive role in managing musculoskeletal symptoms, maintaining movement, and supporting function alongside medical treatment.

We work collaboratively with rheumatologists and GPs for patients with inflammatory arthritis and always adapt our treatment approach to the stage and activity of the condition.

Gout

Gout is caused by the buildup of uric acid crystals in the joints, most commonly affecting the big toe, ankle, and knee. Acute gout flares require medical management rather than osteopathic treatment. However, we regularly help patients with the musculoskeletal consequences of recurrent gout, including joint stiffness, movement restriction, and associated muscle tension.

Soft tissue treatment

Targeted massage and myofascial release to reduce muscle tension around arthritic joints, improve circulation, and ease the protective guarding that often develops around painful joints and contributes significantly to stiffness and disability.

Medical Acupuncture

Acupuncture has a well established evidence base for osteoarthritis pain, particularly in the knee and hip. It works by stimulating the body's own pain modulating systems and can provide significant and sustained pain relief in arthritic joints.

Frequently Asked Questions About Ankle Pain

Can an osteopath help with arthritis?

Yes. Osteopathy is effective for managing arthritis pain, improving joint movement, and supporting function. For osteoarthritis in particular, the combination of manual therapy and exercise rehabilitation that we provide is recommended by NICE guidelines and is one of the most evidence based approaches available.

Can osteopathy reverse arthritis?

No. Osteopathy cannot reverse cartilage degeneration or the structural changes of arthritis. What it can do is significantly reduce pain, improve movement, slow progression, and help you stay active and independent for longer. For many patients, that makes a life changing difference.

I have been told I need a hip or knee replacement. Should I still see an osteopath?

Yes. Many patients who are on a waiting list for joint replacement, or who have been advised that surgery may be needed in the future, benefit significantly from osteopathic treatment and rehabilitation in the meantime. In some cases, the improvement is sufficient to avoid or significantly delay surgery. In others, treatment helps optimise your condition before surgery and speeds recovery afterward.

Can osteopathy help with rheumatoid arthritis?

Yes, as a supportive treatment alongside your medical management. We do not treat the underlying autoimmune condition, but we can help manage the musculoskeletal symptoms, maintain joint movement, and support your function and quality of life. We always adapt our approach to the activity of the condition and work collaboratively with your rheumatologist and GP.

How many sessions will I need?

Arthritis is a long term condition and most patients benefit from a course of treatment followed by periodic maintenance appointments to manage symptoms and maintain function. We will give you a realistic indication at your first appointment and always review the treatment plan regularly.

Do I need a GP referral?

No. You can book directly with us. If we identify anything that requires further investigation or onward referral, we will advise you at your appointment.

How quickly can I get an appointment in Bristol?

We aim to offer appointments within a few days. Book online or call us and we will get you in as soon as possible.

Red Flags and When to Seek Urgent Help

Osteoarthritis is a long-standing condition that is appropriate for osteopathic assessment and treatment; however please seek urgent medical attention if you experience:

A sudden severe flare of joint pain with significant swelling, heat and redness in a joint, particularly if accompanied by fever.

Rapid onset of pain, swelling, and warmth in a joint without a previous history of arthritis.

Progressive weakness, numbness, or loss of function in a limb associated with joint pain.

Unexplained weight loss, night sweats or fatigue alongside joint pain.

New or worsening joint pain following a fall or trauma, particularly in older patients with known osteoporosis.

If in doubt, always seek urgent medical advice before booking an osteopathic appointment. We are always happy to advise over the phone if you are unsure whether osteopathic treatment is appropriate for your situation.
