Knee Pain Treatment in Bristol | Osteopath for Knee Pain
Knee pain is one of the most common musculoskeletal complaints we treat at Move Easy Osteopathy in Bristol. Whether you’re a runner whose knee has gradually broken down under training load, someone who’s twisted their knee playing sport, or an older patient whose knee has become increasingly stiff and painful over time, knee pain can be debilitating. We aim to make the complicate straight forward.
The knee is caught between two highly mobile joints, the hip above and the ankle below. Problems in either can fundamentally alter how the knee loads and moves, which is why effective knee treatment almost always requires looking beyond the knee itself.

EXCELLENT Based on 112 reviews Posted on Google Hemma PatelTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Dom has been great at helping to relieve my neck pain and headaches. After only a few sessions, my headaches have stopped. He listened to what I wanted or didn't want as part of my treatment and made me feel comfortable.Posted on Google Max SimpsonTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Had recurrent hamstring and lower muscle injuries for years as a rugby player working a desk job. Dom pointed out several factors that were causing the injuries I wasn’t aware of and his treatment has loosened up my entire posterior chain. Have been able to play with much lower rate of reoccurrence and at a higher level when I thought I was needing to retire at 27. Just finished an entire season injury free at 30.Posted on Google Demitri EliadesTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Great professional service, very knowledgeable. I have had many physical issues throughout my life whether it be a knee a hip, a neck or an ankle Dom is the guy. If you have any pain or alignment issues, then I would highly recommend this incredibly skilled man. I trust him 100% with all problems. Please note that he is also an incredible massage therapist and probably one of if not the most intuitive therapists I have ever had the pleasure of seeing, which in my case is literally hundreds. You don’t even have to tell him where that point is that you want him to massage or touch he will find it instantly. He’s incredibly geeky and 100% nerd worthy. He knows his stuff and is clearly an expert. Full of beans and positive energy. Plus, he’s built like a rugby player so no matter what your size he can do the job. You literally won’t get any better service from anyone else. Genuinely how I feel. Thanks Dom.Posted on Google David ThomasTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Dom has a brilliant demeanour; approachable, super knowledgeable and calming - this helped so much with understanding of my injury and return timelines. Having injured my shoulder playing rugby, I was struggling to exercise in any capacity, particularly playing rugby. Dom quickly diagnosed the injury and set out a plan for return to exercise. With Dom I was able to return to exercise with confidence and have had no problems since. Being an osteopath, Dom was able to perform manual therapy through dry needling and soft tissue manipulation in each session, which I am sure made a difference.Posted on Google Isobel Astley-CooperTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. What Causes Knee Pain?
Knee pain has many possible causes, and accurate diagnosis is essential before any treatment begins. At Move Easy Osteopathy in Bristol, we commonly treat:
Patellofemoral pain syndrome (runner’s knee) pain around or behind the kneecap, typically worsening with running, stairs, squatting, and prolonged sitting. One of the most common knee complaints we see, particularly in runners and cyclists. Usually driven by weakness in the hip and gluteal muscles, poor foot mechanics, or a sudden increase in training load.
Iliotibial band syndrome (IT band syndrome) a sharp, burning pain on the outside of the knee that typically comes on at a predictable point during a run. Extremely common in runners and cyclists. Despite the pain being at the knee, the cause is usually higher up, in the hip, glute, and the way load is distributed through the lower limb.
Patellar tendinopathy degeneration, inflammation and pain in the patellar tendon, which connects the kneecap to the shin. Causes pain just below the kneecap, typically worsening with jumping, landing, and loading activities. Common in basketball players, volleyball players, and runners. Responds well to a structured loading programme.
Meniscus injuries the menisci are two C-shaped pieces of cartilage that act as shock absorbers in the knee. They can be torn acutely, typically from a twisting injury, or degenerate over time. Symptoms include pain along the joint line, swelling, clicking, and in some cases locking of the knee. Osteopathic treatment is effective for many meniscal presentations, particularly degenerative tears.
Ligament sprains the knee has four main ligaments — the ACL, PCL, MCL, and LCL. Sprains range from mild stretching to complete rupture. We assess ligament integrity thoroughly and refer for imaging or surgical opinion where appropriate. Rehabilitation following ligament injury, including post-surgical ACL reconstruction, is an important part of our work.
Osteoarthritis degenerative wear of the knee cartilage is extremely common, particularly in patients over 50 and those with a history of injury or heavy physical work. Symptoms include stiffness, pain, swelling, and crepitus (clicking or grinding). Osteopathic treatment cannot reverse degenerative changes but can significantly reduce pain, improve function, and slow progression — often dramatically reducing the need for pain medication.
Bursitis the knee has several bursae, which are small fluid-filled sacs that reduce friction between structures. The prepatellar bursa (at the front of the knee) and the pes anserine bursa (on the inner side) are most commonly affected. Bursitis causes localised swelling and tenderness and usually responds well to conservative treatment.
Referred pain from the hip or lower back not all knee pain originates in the knee. The hip and lumbar spine can refer pain into the knee, and this is frequently missed. A whole-body assessment is essential to rule this in or out.
Other forms of tendonitis there are many muscles that attach around the knee joint via tendons, including the quadriceps, adductors, hamstrings, calves and more.

Knee Pain in Bristol Treatment
How Osteopathy Treats Knee Pain
At Move Easy Osteopathy in Bristol, we assess the entire lower limb — not just the knee — to understand the full picture of why your knee is painful. Treatment is tailored to the specific diagnosis and your individual goals:
Joint mobilisation
specific techniques to restore normal movement in the knee joint, and where relevant the hip, ankle, and lumbar spine. Improving the function of the joints above and below the knee is often as important as treating the knee itself.
Soft tissue treatment
targeted work on the quadriceps, hamstrings, IT band, calf, and hip muscles to reduce tension, improve circulation, and address the muscular imbalances that frequently drive knee pain.
Medical Acupuncture
effective for knee conditions involving trigger points in the quadriceps, IT band, and gluteal muscles. Can provide significant and rapid pain relief, particularly for chronic presentations.
Gait and Movement Analysis
for runners and athletes, we assess your running gait, squatting mechanics, and single-leg control to identify the movement faults contributing to your knee pain. Changing how you move is often the missing piece that prevents knee problems from recurring.
Rehabilitation and Strength Work
using our gym space, we design a progressive rehabilitation programme targeting the specific weaknesses driving your knee pain. For most knee conditions, strengthening and improving movement quality is the foundation of lasting recovery. We watch you move and address what we find.
Load Management Advice
for tendinopathies and overuse injuries, how much you do and how you progress activity is as important as what happens in the treatment room. We give you a clear, structured plan for managing your training load during recovery.

Frequently Asked Questions for Knee Pain
Can an osteopath help with knee pain?
Yes. Osteopathy is effective for a wide range of knee conditions, from acute sports injuries to chronic degenerative pain. Accurate diagnosis is the starting point, and treatment is tailored to the specific cause of your pain.
Can osteopathy help with runner’s knee?
Yes. Patellofemoral pain syndrome and IT band syndrome are conditions we treat regularly and successfully. The key is identifying the underlying cause, usually hip weakness and movement dysfunction, rather than just treating the painful area.
Can osteopathy help with knee osteoarthritis?
Yes. While osteopathy cannot reverse cartilage degeneration, it can significantly reduce pain, improve joint movement, and slow the progression of symptoms. Many of our patients with knee osteoarthritis avoid or delay surgery through a combination of manual treatment and exercise rehabilitation.
Do I need a scan before seeing an osteopath?
No. In most cases we can assess and begin treating knee pain without imaging. If we feel a scan would help confirm the diagnosis or guide treatment, we’ll advise you accordingly. You don’t need to wait for an MRI before booking.
How many sessions will I need?
It depends on the diagnosis. Acute soft tissue injuries often resolve within 4-6 sessions. Chronic conditions like osteoarthritis, tendinopathy, post-surgical rehabilitation typically require a longer course of treatment and a structured exercise programme. We’ll give you a realistic indication at your first appointment.
Can osteopathy help after knee surgery?
Yes. Post-surgical rehabilitation is an important part of our work. We see patients following ACL reconstruction, meniscal repair, and knee replacement who need structured rehabilitation to restore strength, movement, and confidence.
My knee clicks- is that a problem?
Clicking or crepitus in the knee is very common and in most cases is not a sign of serious damage. However, clicking accompanied by pain, swelling, or giving way warrants assessment. We’ll evaluate what’s causing it and advise accordingly.
Do I need a GP referral?
No. You can book directly with us. If we identify anything that requires further investigation or onward referral, we’ll advise you at your appointment.
How quickly can I get an appointment in Bristol?
We aim to offer appointments within a few days. Book online or call us and we’ll get you in as soon as possible.
Red Flags and When to Seek Urgent Help
Most knee pain is appropriate for osteopathic assessment and treatment. However, please seek urgent medical attention if your knee:
– Is severely swollen, hot, and painful following an injury. Possible fracture or serious ligament rupture
– Is locked and you cannot straighten it
– Gives way repeatedly and you cannot weight bear
– Is accompanied by fever, or becomes rapidly swollen without a clear injury. Possible infection or inflammatory joint condition
– Was injured in a high-velocity accident
If in doubt, always seek urgent medical advice before booking an osteopathic appointment.
Feel free to call us if you have any questions and we can point you in the right direction.
