Expert Osteopath for Headaches in Bristol

Headaches one of the most common reasons people seek treatment, often caused by muscle strain, poor posture, injuries, or long hours sitting at a desk.

We regularly help with:

Types of Headache We Treat

Not all headaches are the same, and accurate diagnosis is essential before any treatment begins. At Move Easy Osteopathy in Bristol, we commonly treat:

Tension headaches one of the most common types. A dull, pressing pain that typically affects both sides of the head, often described as a tight band around the skull. Tension headaches are strongly associated with muscle tension in the neck, shoulders, and upper back, making them highly responsive to osteopathic treatment.

Cervicogenic headaches  literally means ‘headaches that originate in the neck’ (‘cervical spine’=neck, ‘genic’ = originates). The joints, muscles, and nerves of the cervical spine can all refer pain into the head, producing headaches that are easily mistaken for tension headaches or migraines. These are particularly common in people who sit at desks for long periods or have a history of neck injury or whiplash. Osteopathy is one of the most effective treatments available for cervicogenic headaches.

Migraines a neurological condition characterised by intense, often one-sided head pain, frequently accompanied by nausea, light sensitivity, and visual disturbances. While migraines have a neurological basis, musculoskeletal tension, particularly in the neck and upper back, is a well-established trigger. Osteopathic treatment can reduce the frequency and severity of migraines by addressing these triggers, even if it cannot eliminate the underlying neurological susceptibility.

Post-whiplash headaches headaches that develop following a neck injury, commonly from road traffic accidents. These can persist for months or years if the underlying cervical dysfunction is not addressed. Osteopathy has a strong evidence base for treating whiplash-associated disorders.

Headaches related to jaw tension (TMJ) the temporomandibular joint and surrounding muscles can refer pain into the temples, forehead, and behind the eyes. We assess jaw function as part of our headache workup where relevant.

Lifestyle and Trigger Management

for migraine sufferers in particular, identifying and managing personal triggers is an important part of reducing headache frequency. We’ll discuss sleep, hydration, stress, screen use, and other relevant factors.

What Causes Headaches?

In our Bristol clinic, we see headaches arising from a wide range of causes and often a combination of several. Common contributing factors include:

Neck stiffness and joint dysfunction restricted movement in the upper cervical spine is one of the most common and treatable causes of headaches. The joints at the top of the neck have a direct neurological relationship with the nerves to the head and face.

Muscle tension in the neck, shoulders, and upper back prolonged desk work and postures, stress, and deconditioning all contribute to chronic muscle tension that can trigger and maintain headaches.

Postural causes prolonged postures without movement, common in office workers, drivers, and anyone who spends significant time looking at screens, places sustained load on the structures of the neck and upper back, and is strongly associated with both tension and cervicogenic headaches.

Stress the relationship between psychological stress and headache is well established. Stress increases muscle tension, disrupts sleep, and sensitises the nervous system, all of which contribute to headache frequency and severity.

Dehydration and lifestyle factors these can act as triggers, particularly for migraines, and we’ll always discuss lifestyle as part of your management plan.

Previous injury old whiplash injuries, concussions, or other neck trauma can leave residual dysfunction that contributes to ongoing headaches years later.

We see patients from across Bristol, including Clifton, Redland, Cotham, Whiteladies Road, Gloucester Road, Stokes Croft, Westbury Park, the City Centre, Bedminster and Totterdown.

What to Expect from Your First Appointment

Headaches can have many different causes, and we take the assessment seriously. Your first appointment will include:

1. A detailed headache history. Onset, frequency, duration, location, associated symptoms, triggers, and what you’ve already tried.
2. A thorough examination of the neck, upper back, and shoulders, including joint mobility, muscle testing, and neurological screening
3.  Assessment of your posture and how you hold your head and neck
4. A clear explanation of what’s going on and a realistic treatment plan
5. Hands-on treatment in your first session

6. Exercises and advice where necessary

We work closely with GPs where appropriate. If we identify anything that requires further investigation, including any red flag symptoms, we will refer you promptly and clearly.

Red Flags and When to Seek Urgent Help

Osteopathy is appropriate for the vast majority of headaches, but some headaches require urgent medical attention. Please seek emergency care immediately if your headache:

– Comes on suddenly and is the worst headache of your life, often described as a “thunderclap”
– Is accompanied by fever, stiff neck, rash, or sensitivity to light (possible meningitis)
– Follows a head injury
– Is accompanied by confusion, weakness, vision changes, or difficulty speaking, swallowing
– Is progressively worsening over days or weeks

These symptoms are rare, but if in doubt, always seek urgent medical advice rather than booking an osteopathic appointment.

You can call us to ask any questions so we can point you in the right direction.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can an osteopath help with migraines?

Yes, in many cases. Osteopathy cannot cure the neurological basis of migraine, but it can significantly reduce frequency and severity by addressing musculoskeletal triggers, particularly neck tension and joint dysfunction. Many of our migraine patients report a meaningful reduction in the number of migraine days per month.

How many sessions will I need for headaches?

It varies. Many patients with tension or cervicogenic headaches notice significant improvement within 3-5 sessions. Chronic or complex cases, including long-standing migraines, may require more treatment and an ongoing management plan.

Can posture cause headaches?

Yes. Sustained postures are one of the most common and overlooked causes of both tension and cervicogenic headaches. Improving posture through hands-on treatment and targeted exercise can make a significant difference.

Is osteopathy safe for headaches?

Yes. Osteopathic treatment for headaches is safe and well-tolerated. We always perform a thorough assessment before treatment and adapt our approach to your individual presentation. We use gentle techniques in the upper cervical spine and will always work within your comfort level.

I’ve had headaches for years — is it too late to get help?

No. Chronic headaches can be stubborn, but long-standing cases do respond to treatment. It may take longer and require a more comprehensive approach, but we regularly help patients who’ve been suffering for years.

Do I need a GP referral?

No. You can book directly with us. If we feel a GP review or further investigation would be beneficial, we’ll advise you on that at your appointment.

How quickly can I get an appointment in Bristol?

We aim to offer appointments within a few days. Book online or call us and we’ll get you in as soon as possible.
